Beginning the Spiritual Journey

In the Bible God reveals His truth about how to have eternal life by becoming a believer in the finished work of Jesus Christ. The believer is a Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ, a true child of God, and one who has been saved by God according to God’s grace (undeserved favor). Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 2:9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

How does one become a Christian?

The Bible, God’s word, says that eternal life or salvation is a free gift of God which cannot be earned or deserved. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Eph. 2:8For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

However, we also find in God’s word that all people are born sinners and cannot save themselves from the penalty of sin which is eternal death and separation from God.  God’s requirement is perfection and no one is perfect.
Matt. 5:48″Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

God tells us in His word that He is holy meaning that He is perfect and that He is also just meaning that He gives to sinners what is deserved, and because of His holiness and justice must punish sinners. But thankfully, the Bible also says that God is loving and merciful and does not take pleasure in punishing sinners. Exo. 34b yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished.
Ephesians 2:4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 2:5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),  1 John 4:8b for God is love.

We see God’s mercy in that He gave His only Son, Jesus Christ, the God-man, to be the substitute for sinners bearing the penalty for their sin and satisfying God’s justice.  John 1:1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:14And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. Isa. 53:6All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him.  Rom. 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Jesus Himself said that in order for anyone to have eternal life and heaven as one’s home there must be repentance of sins and faith in his substitutionary death on the cross to pay for the penalty of one’s sins.  This faith must be in Jesus Christ alone not depending on anything else including “good works”.
Mark 1:14 b Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, 15and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”  Acts 16:31a They said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved”

What then is your response to these things if you desire to have eternal life and become a Christian?

1. Ask God to forgive you. The Bible says that you must repent of your sins being ashamed of them, genuinely regretting and grieving over them and firmly deciding to make an about-face and turn away from sin and your old lifestyle. Acts 3:19 Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,

2. Tell God that you place your faith in Jesus Christ alone to save you. The Bible says that for you to become a Christian, you must place your faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ who died on the cross to become your substitute and took the penalty for your sin upon Himself once and for all. John 3:36 “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
