MARRIAGE

MARRIAGE

Marriage is a gift.

Marriage is one of the greatest gifts God has given us to enjoy and steward in this life. When marriage is done according to the values of the Kingdom of God not only is it an incredible blessing to the man and woman who form the nucleus of this new family, but it also blesses everyone it touches (children, parents, neighbors, the Church, and society); and above all of that it is a picture of Jesus’ relationship with His people—the Church. Therefore, here at Oakwood, we want to do everything we can to prepare you for marriage, help your marriage grow, and if necessary, facilitate restoring your marriage.

Getting Married

The World has taught us to put more emphasis on preparing for the wedding day than preparing for a lifetime of marriage. Marriage is one of the most incredible and most challenging journeys you will ever embark on. The Bible tells us we would be wise to count the cost and prepare ourselves for this life-altering commitment. If you are engaged to be married, sign up for one of our premarital classes. We offer Merge for first-time marriages and Marrying Again for people who have been previously married.

Merge

Merge is a premarital discipleship ministry designed for engaged couples. It’s a chance to seek wisdom and receive counsel about marriage in a safe, fun, and authentic environment. Merge addresses common questions and challenges from a biblical perspective. There is weekly homework and small group discussions over a 9-week period. Cost is $30 per couple (each person will receive a workbook)

Merge Class Date:
Fall 2025: September 14 at 11:00am

Marrying Again

Marrying again, whether as the result of the death of a spouse or the divorce of a spouse, is, more often than ever, followed by a second marriage. Therefore, premarital preparation for couples who choose to marry again is vitally important. In 6 sessions “Marrying Again” will address topics that need to be carefully considered before a second marriage.

Marrying Again Date:
Summer 2025:  July 13 at 9:30am

2-on-1 Preparation

Schedule an individual series of meetings with an Oakwood pastor by contacting our Family Pastor, Robert Parrish. This is the best option if one of both individuals are not in New Braunfels and require long-distance meetings.

Oakwood Counseling Center

Schedule premarital preparation with a licensed counselor at our counseling center. Call (830) 627-7006 or visit Oakwood Counseling Center

Growing Marriage

A marriage is a little bit like your lawn. You can just let nature take the wheel and see what happens. If that is your lawn maintenance plan, you are likely to have a good number of weeds, a variety of grasses, and some dead/dirt patches when the rain clouds are uncooperative. However, you can also take the approach of fertilizing it, irrigating it, and weeding it. If that is your approach, then you likely have a lawn that a few neighbors are envious of. When can choose to let our marriage run its natural course or we can continually care for and nurture it.

re|engage

At Oakwood we participate in the re|engage marriage enrichment program. Marriages in any condition can benefit, whether you are struggling to get along, your marriage is broken, or you simply want to grow closer together as a couple. re|engage examines God’s design for marriage and how couples can grow together in true Biblical oneness.

Marriage Mentoring

If you are having difficulty in your marriage or your marriage is in full-blown crisis, you should consider marriage mentoring. Our marriage mentors are a part of our Oakwood church family and have been in the Dare to be Different Marriage Mentor training program. You will be paired with another couple who is further down the marriage path than you, that will be able to meet with you at times that fit your schedule. Mentoring time commitment varies from couple to couple but expect anywhere between 6-10 weeks. This includes 1-hour weekly sessions and homework. There is a small fee of $50 to cover materials. Each session you and your spouse will meet with your mentor couple to work through the challenges in your marriage from a Biblical perspective. Your marriage is worth it!
